TrueNet releases Mobile Broadband Study
TrueNet releases Mobile Broadband Study
2011-06-14
TrueNet today has released a paper studying the data performance of the three mobile carriers from the point of view of a user in the street. Select here or on the icon below to download a copy;
The paper compares TrueNet's Mobile results in Wellington with a Mobile broadband paper covering the entire UK, released by Ofcom, the UK regulator.
TrueNet's results show carriers in New Zealand have a mix of performance advantages and disadvantages. The tests include Browsing, File transfers and Network Latency.
Summarised, the results of our mobile tests show:
• Telecom is the best for national download speeds
for video or mail.
•
• 2Degrees is the best for
web browsing such as downloading TradeMe.
•
• Vodafone is the best for uploading a file
and international downloads.
•
For the technically
minded the TrueNet methodology includes;
1. HTTP download
using the cURL command to test the speed of
throughput from a file located on the trademe
website
2.
3. cURL command to upload a file to the
TrueNet website
4.
5. HTTP webpage download using the
Wget command to collect a dummy webpage from the trademe
website. The dummy site is constructed to equate to the
average number of files, size and type of files for the
websites in the top 10 NZ sites identified by Hitwise.
(Unlike the Ofcom measure which uses cURL to download just
the words, we download the full website using Wget, this
enables good image compression methods to impact the
result)
6.
7. Tests are completed every 100 meters or
20 seconds, whichever is first.
8.
9. Timeouts on
failure is 60s
10.
11. Each test is initiated for
each carrier at the same moment, ensuring fixed or moving
obstructions, local weather and time of day is precisely the
same for each carrier.
12.
13. All tests are on 3G
only
14.
15. The equipment we use includes; a Sierra Wireless mc8700 and a Routerboard 411U for each carrier and
one Holux USB GPS receiver to detect
location.
16.
17. GPS location information is
recorded for each test.
