Next week the cream of New Zealand’s auctioneers battle it out for top billing at a two day national Auctioneers Championship run by the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand. The highlight of the year for auctioneers New Zealand-wide, this winning spot is hotly contested each year with the winner and runner-up advancing to the Australasian championship in Melbourne, Victoria in September for an exciting trans-Tasman battle.

“It’s a fantastic event,” says REINZ CEO, Helen O’Sullivan. “It’s really entertaining as well as being hugely challenging. The champs have been a great way for us to support and promote excellence in the real estate arena. Without doubt, they have been an important catalyst in lifting the standard and professionalism of real estate auctioneers throughout New Zealand.”

The REINZ Auctioneers Championship is aimed at fostering sometimes very nervous novices as well as giving the old hands an opportunity to demonstrate skills honed in a tough market. The championships move from strength to strength with the number of 2011 entries hitting an all time high since the competition began 16 years ago.

But auctioneering is not all about putting a price on bricks and mortar. REINZ Board Chair, Rosanne Meo, is mindful of the contribution auctioneers make to the charity sector throughout New Zealand.

“With these championships, we recognise the generous contribution that auctioneers make to the charity sector - almost all of these auctioneers will be called upon during the year to conduct auctions at charity events, which they do generously and free of charge. As Chair of the Philharmonia Orchestra Board, I have first-hand experience of the considerable generosity of our auctioneers and, for that, we applaud them.”

Whether competing, observing, judging, critiquing or coaching, the REINZ Auctioneers Champs is great fun for all. Hammers fall next week at the Ellerslie Events Centre on 4th and 5th June 2011.
