Jet Park Hotel wins Enviro Gold
Award
The family owned and operated Jet Park Hotel & Conference Centre has recently been named as the recipient of an Enviro Gold Award.
Awarded by Qualmark New Zealand, the Enviro Awards recognise businesses in the Kiwi hospitality industry that are working to reduce their environmental impact.
The Enviro Gold Award is given to the very top performers in five key action areas: energy efficiency, waste management, water conservation, community activities and conservation initiatives. This year, Jet Park Hotel was rewarded for their most recent earth-friendly actions, which are ensuring that they take care of the environment as well as their guests.
The most notable change of the last year is the solar panel farm that Jet Park has installed, which will provide hot water for a large wing of the hotel.
Another bright initiative Jet Park has taken is to issue guests with key cards that are designed to control the lights in their rooms, so that when they’re out, the lights are too.
Jet Park has also introduced showers and toilets that use less water; systems that ensure that rubbish is separated from recyclables, so that as little as possible ends up in waste disposal; kitchen waste is composted in a pilot program; and light bulbs and fittings have been fitted to refurbished rooms that use less than a third of the energy of standard ones. Even its branded water bottles are made of “natural plastic” created from plants, not oil.
A small haven of greenery, filled with native trees and vegetation, has also brought a spot of life to Jet Park in what is an increasingly commercial area around Auckland’s airport. The native trees and mulched gardens ensure that little is needed for garden watering, and native birds are even moving to the area!
Sebastian Herrmann, Jet Park’s general manager, says that he believes that protecting our beautiful New Zealand environment is of utmost importance.
“Jet Park has always been 100% New Zealand owned and operated by my family,” he says.
“We love this country and know that we have something really special in our stunning environment. We work in hospitality, and we are bringing people from around the world in to see our country – we want to keep it the way it is, so that we can continue to share what makes us so magical.”
Sharing has, in fact, become a major part of Jet Parks recycling activity, with furniture from recently refurbished rooms given away to staff, and good second-hand linen donated to help Women’s Refuge. In fact, a complete re-fit of 48 premier rooms resulted in only two skips of rubbish – an amazing accomplishment.
