Auckland's only Private Eating Disorder Centre Opens on 08/08/11

There are many threats affecting our youth today; issues like alcoholism, drug addiction, infectious diseases and illnesses loom over our teenagers on a daily basis. However, eating disorders are on the rise in our western society and we often forget just how devastating they can be for the individuals, their families and the communities they live in.

An eating disorder is a mental illness that affects an estimated 10% of our youth, and unfortunately most of its victims are amongst the most intelligent and gifted children our community has to offer. Currently in the Auckland area, there have been no services that deliver both educational and medical solutions to treat these insidious diseases, until now.

Flourish is the Recovery Solutions Group Trust’s (RSGT) new private Eating Disorders Service, opening in the Auckland area on the 8th of August 2011, and catering for individuals suffering from Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa and from an eating disorder not otherwise specified (EDNOS).

Flourish was born out of the need to care for individuals going through the earlier stages of an eating disorder, who do not qualify for publically funded treatment, because their Body Mass Index (BMI) is not alarmingly low. We believe in taking a proactive approach to eating disorders treatment through early detection, research and education. If you are aware of the first symptoms of the illness the prognosis will be much more positive, and the chances of making a full recovery will be higher.

We have ambitious plans to become the best eating disorders treatment centre available, through continuous research of the best treatment outcomes in this field, on an international level. Why is it that some institutions/foundations have a 20% success rate while others have an 80% success rate? We have to find the answer and bring it back to New Zealand.

My vision is to deliver the very best eating disorders service in the world, so that whether you are living in London, Tokyo or Mount Eden, you will want your daughter or son to be treated at Flourish.
