The public memorial service for Allan Hubbard will be held on October 8th at the Timaru Sound Shell. The service will start at 1.30pm with Timaru mayor Janie Annear officiating the ceremony.
Allan Hubbard who died recently as a result of a car accident, is well known throughout New Zealand for the substantial contributions he has made to charitable and community causes including Scouts and Presbyterian Social Services. He is known to have donated over $200 Million dollars. He is also widely known for his contributions and support to the rural sector in everything from dairy farming, horiticulture, irrigation, helicopters, engineering, building and finance.
In 2003 he was awarded Honorary Doctorate at Otago University for Philanthropy, and in 2005 he was awarded a Queens Service Medal.
Mr Hubbard, also received an honorary Doctor of Commerce degree at Lincoln University in 2006. He practised as a chartered accountant in Timaru for over 50 years. He left school in Dunedin at 15 and starting work as an office boy, then went on to pay his own way through university after encouragement from his employer to return to night school and obtain school certificate.
Through hard work, determination, perseverance and vision he built a substantial capital base that allowed him to invest significantly in a wide range of ventures and provide financial support to numerous individuals, agencies and enterprises.
Avoidance of the limelight and a preference for quiet anonymity have always characterised his way of working.
