Alpine Health & Fitness Goes Pink for Breast Cancer
Alpine Health & Fitness are providing numerous opportunities for everyone to take part in this month’s Breast Cancer Action Month. Those wishing to get behind the cause can attend a Bid for Your Bike RPM session, a Pink Afternoon Tea or Pink Zumba or purchase pink shoe laces from Queenstown Events Centre. All in the name of raising money for Wakatipu women with breast cancer. These events are open to anyone who is willing to make a donation and wear something pink.
The Pink Afternoon Tea, aimed at older members of the community, is taking place this Friday 7 October at 2.30pm, at the Queenstown Events Centre. Tickets are $5 per person and everyone is welcome. A home baked afternoon tea will be provided along with entertainment by the Queenstown Primary Ukelele Group and decorations provided by the Year 8 students.
The Bid for Your Bike RPM Session – the main event for active participants – is taking place on Saturday 8 October at 12.30pm and bike bidding opened today. The number of bikes has doubled since last year’s event, going from 25 to 50 bikes, allowing even more people to take part. Participants can either “bid” for a bike - by making a minimum $20 bid via a silent auction - or "buy" a bike for $100, guaranteeing a spot in the class. Each of the 50 bikes will be numbered and a random draw will determine which of the many local prizes are won.
The other Saturday morning RPM, Stretch and Pump classes will be by gold coin donation and again are open to everyone, not just Alpine Health & Fitness members. The final class will be Pink Zumba at Queenstown Memorial Hall on Tuesday 18 October at 6.30pm with all proceeds from the $5 entry fee going to Breast Cancer NZ and Wakatipu women with breast cancer. Maria Bradley, Group Fitness Coordinator at Alpine Health & Fitness, is championing these events for the second year running, breast cancer being a subject very close to her heart.
“Having only recently completed my own chemotherapy treatments, I want to give something back to the community, especially to the Wakatipu women who are still fighting their own battles with cancer. Many people have been effected by cancer – both young and old – which is why we’re offering a range of events this year for all ages and levels of activity. I’m a big believer in exercise - it’s what got me through my cancer treatments.”
Richie Heap, Alpine Health & Fitness manager said “With more opportunities for people to take part, through a wider range of events and double the number of bikes to bid for, we’re hoping that this year’s event will surpass the total of $5,500 that we raised last year. It would be great to see more people get involved and we’ve got even more fantastic prizes to give away this year, thanks to dozens of donations from local businesses such as Amisfield & Mt Edward Wines, AJ Hackett Bungy, DECODE, Crisp and Vale Foodstore, Cup & Cake Queenstown, plus many more.”
Tickets to the Pink Afternoon Tea, Bid for Your Bike and $10 Pink Shoe Laces can be purchased at Queenstown Events Centre. Pink Zumba tickets will be sold at Queenstown Memorial Hall on the night.
