First NZ Certifier of Natural Cosmetics Announced

MEDIA RELEASE
October 4, 2011

First New Zealand Certifier of Natural Cosmetics Announced Today

BioGro New Zealand Ltd announced today it is the first New Zealand based certifier to provide natural cosmetic certification in Oceania following its recent accreditation as a NATRUE approved Certifier.

BioGro also announced that New Zealand natural brand Trilogy will be the first skincare company to be certified by BioGro under this internationally recognised natural cosmetic standard.

Dr Michelle Glogau, BioGro Chief Executive says; “The natural health and body care market has enjoyed rapid growth over the past few years driven by consumers’ concerns for not only what they put in their bodies but also what they put on them. Increasingly, consumers wanting to do the right thing are being taken advantage of with products marketed under the guise of being “natural” when many bear little resemblance to what a consumer would expect or would be allowed under natural standards. As New Zealand’s leading organic certifier, we are pleased to now provide consumers with the assurance and confidence that a natural product certified by us meets internationally recognised NATRUE natural cosmetic standards. Verification of this is achieved through a robust and independent certification process."

NATRUE Director General Julie Tyrrell affirms; “We are proud to have BioGro as a NATRUE approved Certifier reflecting the success and geographical spread of the NATRUE Label”.

Trilogy co-founder Catherine de Groot is delighted Trilogy will be able to offer consumers the assurance of this new certification. “This is groundbreaking for New Zealand. The standard provides manufacturers and consumers alike with a clear direction for defining natural cosmetics for the first time. New Zealand consumers will now be able to make informed decisions about their natural skincare choices. The NATRUE certification offered by BioGro will be a guarantee to consumers that the products they are buying are authentically natural."

BIOGRO

BioGro is New Zealand’s leading organic certifier. Owned by the New Zealand Biological Producers and Consumers’ Society, a not-for-profit, incorporated society and registered charity, BioGro has been at the forefront of commercial organics in New Zealand since it was founded 28 years ago.

BioGro’s certification programmes are recognized internationally. It is accredited by International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM) alongside JAS-ANZ accreditation for Product Certification and Inspection.

BioGro New Zealand is now accredited by NATRUE and is the first local certification body to officially bring NATRUE’s certification to New Zealand.

NATRUE

NATRUE is the non-profit International Natural and Organic Cosmetic Association established by pioneer European manufacturers of Natural and Organic Cosmetics in 2007 to promote and protect natural beauty and skin care products.

The NATRUE Label comprises three levels: natural products, natural products with an organic portion and organic cosmetic products. The NATRUE certification standard goes further than any definition of natural cosmetics so far established in terms of consistency and complete transparency. In partnering with BioGro New Zealand, the first products complying with NATRUE’S internationally recognised standard will be certified in New Zealand.
