New Vehicle Market Patchy


September registration data shows that new car sales were down 9.7% (614 units) on the same month last year; however commercial vehicle registrations were up by 18% (298 units) over the same period.


“In spite of all of the supply constraints the new vehicle market is still ahead on a year to date basis in both the passenger car (up 4%) and commercial vehicle (up 16.5%) segments” said Mr Kerr, Chief Executive Officer of the Motor Industry Association. “The industry has had a bumpy ride but has managed to meet market demands. There is still some catch-up in the market so hopefully sales will remain positive for the last quarter of the year” he said.


Toyota took out top spot of the passenger car segment with 990 registrations giving it just under 17.5% market share. Holden was in second spot with 578 registrations (10.2%) followed in third place by Hyundai with 493 registrations (8.7%). These positions are repeated in the year to date totals. For commercial vehicles Toyota continued its domination with 553 registrations. Mitsubishi had strong sales coming in second with 215 registrations followed by Holden with 177.


Supplies of Toyota Corolla have obviously resumed with the Corolla again taking top spot in the model stakes with 367 registrations. This model reclaimed top spot year to date with 2,456 registrations. Mazda had a strong month with the Mazda3 the second best-selling model (227 registrations) with the Suzuki Swift third with 199 registrations. In the commercial segment Toyota took out the top two spots with the Hilux remaining the top selling commercial vehicle with 300 registrations followed by the Hiace with 211. In third place was the Holden Colorado with 163 registrations.
