Design Aloud: The Latest in Art, Architecture and Design
Design Aloud is the new venue to discuss what is trending in design. Design Aloud is where you will read the latest information from the worlds of art, architecture and interior design. Each entry is a personal interpretation of design happenings from a qualified design expert.
Entries cover topics as varied as keeping corporate operations green and Amsterdam architecture. Some entries discuss trips to factories in foreign countries where management and employees are committed to reducing their companies’ negative impact on the environment. This occurs even as the businesses turn out high-quality products to use in interior design.
For example, entries from September and October 2011 cover a trip to Interface Carpets factory in Sydney. The authors describe the efforts Interface Carpets has made to increase its usage of environmentally friendly materials and employment of green manufacturing processes. They were impressed with how the company works to encourage its suppliers to also be committed to green materials, technology and processes. This helps the end product from Interface Carpets to be as environmentally responsible as possible.
Interface Carpets’ offices are located in a heritage listed building, and the company uses materials in it that will least impact the building’s historical structure. From flooring material that can easily be removed to reveal the original timber floors to a policy not to alter the office’s walls or ceiling in any way, the design strives to protect and celebrate the original work in the building.
A trip to Amsterdam impressed Design Aloud’s authors as the architecture there is fundamentally different than what they experience in New Zealand. The narrow street fronts of buildings and narrow streets make for some interesting designs in the city. The city’s engineers also created impressive methods of creating land for the water-logged city. The blog entry from 30 September 2011 details the authors’ experiences in Amsterdam.
Check back often with Design Aloud to see what companies throughout the art, architecture and design industries are doing to make the world a more beautiful place. New entries are posted regularly, and the topics the authors cover are always new.
