AMAZON opens super store in Northlands Mall, Christchurch
Amazon surf, skate, denim is staying true to its commitment to retail in the Canterbury region by opening an Amazon super store in Northlands Mall.
The huge new store is over 700 sqm and features men’s and women’s clothing, watches and accessories from NZ and the world’s leading youth brands as well as an inbuilt skate ramp, inbuilt DJ booth and surfing library.
“We believe in the rebuild of Christchurch and our confidence in the local economy stands true with our new Northlands Mall Amazon store. Amazon has long been part of the Christchurch retail landscape and we're totally committed to the rebuild of this beautiful city.”
“In designing the Northlands store we wanted to help rebuild without ever forgetting the past. Much of the store has been built using recycled planks, doors and materials from the past lives of our many friends and family. Hopefully together, we will rise again to make something great.” Says Amazon New Zealand General Manager Jason Neely.
To celebrate the opening of the store with a bang ‘The Game of SKATE’ event will be held in store on Saturday November 5th from 1.00pm until 5.00pm. The competition will see some of the South Island’s top skaters compete for a top prize of $1500 and a second prize of $750 plus several spot prizes.
Organiser of the event Justin Watene tells us what to expect.
“The knock out style competition is full noise; it can cause some heavy upsets. The day starts with 16 contestants and is played in heats of 2 with winners moving through to the next bracket. The tricks get crazier and the atmosphere is heated as the day goes on. It will be a great one for locals and shoppers to head down and catch a look at,” he says.
On the day skater personalities Stacey le Plant and Greg Timmz will act as referees while skater pro Levi ‘nek minute’ Hawkins will be on hand to MC. As well as sixteen Opens Mens entrants there are also eight junior entrants taking part in the competition.
Christchurch skater James Kingston who this week placed second at the National Skateboard Titles talks about the local skating scene.
“Things have changed a bit down here, since the earthquake it’s opened up a few more spots with cracks in the road but we’ve lost a lot with the Red Zone shut and not being able to get into all the good spots in the CBD. The Game of SKATE will bring us skaters back together and bring out the best from these parts, I’m amped!”
Adding a personalised touch to the store, skater turned brand man Dan Buckley used his skills to create a special style of tagging art which saw him working for hours on end designing a “mad look” for the store front.
