Waihi Beach Top 10 Holiday Resort: Camping At Its Best

Camping At Its Best

Waihi Beach Top 10 Holiday Resort has been awarded Business of the Year in the 2011 Tauranga Westpac Business Awards. As an outstanding and popular tourism business, it has a positive impact on the Waihi Beach community. Holidaymakers have been visiting the park for decades and many New Zealand families return to the resort as their trusted summer holiday location.

“Our customers are an eclectic blend from all walks of life. The regulars and local residents that use our facilities create a community feel that means anyone visiting the resort are met with a fun and friendly atmosphere”, comment Ian and Vicki Smith.

The land on which the resort resides is owned by the Department of Conservation and has seen many leaseholders come and go. None have been as ambitious and committed as Ian and Vicki who bought the business in 1996. They have transformed what was once a motor camp with basic facilities into a first rate holiday resort.

Ian and Vicki invite those that haven’t stayed at a holiday park for a while to surprise themselves. “These days its not cold showers and lumpy mattresses, holiday parks have changed! We’ve recognised that we are competing against hotels and motels so we’ve upped the game.” And that they have; in 2009 the business altered its name to Waihi Beach TOP 10 Holiday Resort reflecting the dynamic nature of the business and intention to provide an experience rather than ‘just’ accommodation.

The resort employs 12 staff, 8 full-time employees and 4 part-time. The focus of employment of staff in all areas of the business is on being customer conscious in all that they do. From the front-line of reception to the stars that keep all ship-shape and clean, it is understood that everyone plays an important role in customer satisfaction.

Excellent communications and customer service has recently had to include the challenges of Rena impacting the business. Ian and Vicki and their staff are advocating to all coastal Bay of Plenty tourism businesses that they remain positive and work together to provide the public with a clear and true picture of what is happening in the Bay of Plenty while the salvage process takes place.

Waihi Beach TOP 10 Holiday Park won the Tourism category at the Westpac sponsored awards function going on to win the honour of the overall award ‘Business of the Year’. Other awards presented to the business were for Community Service/Social Responsibility and Customer Service.
