Christchurch sunscreen on top of the world

Christchurch sunscreen on top of the world

Oasis sunscreen manufactured in Christchurch, New Zealand has found itself being used in the most extreme environments including atop the world’s highest mountains.

A decade ago, when Stephanie Kimpton was experimenting with sunscreen formulations, a mountain guide by the name of Marty Schmidt was climbing the world’s highest mountains.

Then, five years ago, their worlds collided at the Eco Expo in Christchurch. Marty found Steph selling her range of naturally inspired skin care products under the Oasis Beauty brand. They started chatting and he purchased some products from her.

A year later, Marty phoned Oasis Beauty HQ. He had just got back from climbing Mt Everest.

“I didn’t initially recognize Marty’s name when he called”, Steph said. “He told me he was back from an expedition to Mt Everest and had used my sunscreen for the trip. I thought it was a wind-up!”

But upon investigation, Steph found that Marty is a well-respected mountain and ski guide with a climbing record that is second to none.

Marty’s specialty lies with the eight-thousanders. These are 14 mountains that are more than 8,000 metres (26,247 ft) high above sea level. They are all located in the Himalayan and Karakoram mountain ranges in Asia and include Mt Everest and K2. Marty’s style of guiding is also well known: no sherpas, no oxygen, no huts, no helicopters; just walk in and out on their own.

For the past 4 years, Marty has used and endorsed Oasis Sun on his expeditions to the Himalayas and around the world. Marty also endorses Oasis Beauty’s healing cream sold under the brand Rhino Repair.

“I had formulated Oasis Sun as a natural sunscreen specifically for children’s sensitive skin,” Steph commented. “It wasn’t intended to be used by mountaineers in extreme environments, so I was overwhelmed to hear Marty say, that in his 35 years of guiding, Oasis Sun was the best sunscreen he has ever used!”

Marty is known for his pure approach to the mountains and he’s taken the same tack with Oasis Beauty. He puts his name to Oasis Sun for free because he believes in it.

Steph says, “As a Christchurch business, we’ve had our fair share of challenges over the past 2 years with the earthquakes. It has really got me down at times.

But having an inspirational mountain guide like Marty Schmidt get in behind our products has put us back on top of the world!
