DOC Ranger in Your Pocket

The Department of Conservation (DOC) is in the process of revolutionising the way in which visitors can access information about the Tongariro Alpine Crossing – by putting a DOC ranger in their pocket.

A new Smart Phone application, the Pocket Ranger – developed and launched by DOC, in partnership with Turangi-based community group Project Tongariro – will transform the way visitors access important information at Tongariro National Park.

As well as supplying vital details about the Tongariro Alpine Crossing – including mapping, interpretation, and safety messages – the Pocket Ranger provides local information on accommodation, activities, transport, guiding, dining and more.

DOC Community Relations Officer David Conley says DOC and Project Tongariro made a significant investment in developing the Pocket Ranger because it benefits both parties.

“It adds value to the visitors’ experience, DOC gets out its important safety and conservation messages, and Project Tongariro gains profile and generates funds that flow back into local conservation projects,” he said.

The application has also been developed for use as a ‘template’ that can be easily adapted for use in other great walks, national parks, cycle ways and mountain biking tracks.

“The Pocket Ranger will enhance visitor experiences, increase community input into conservation, and increase exposure for local businesses. This is the way DOC wants to work – engaging with, and providing support to, the community to provide so much more.”
