PwC welcomes the Government’s ‘NZ Inc China Strategy’ launch

News Release
PwC welcomes the Government’s ‘NZ Inc China Strategy’ launch

Following on from today’s Government announcement of its NZ Inc China Strategy, PwC confirms its support for the policy directions and partnership objectives.

PwC Partner and China sector spokesperson Colum Rice believes China will be an important source of funding for New Zealand business and infrastructure.

“New Zealand has benefited from China being our second largest trading partner. China has continued to grow strongly when most of the rest of the world has faltered. The Government has recognised the importance of the relationship with China for the future economic prosperity of New Zealand. The Government is committing resources to take economic ties with China to a new level,” says Mr Rice.

“New Zealand’s strong trade links with China mean we are well positioned to continue to benefit from the strength of the China economy. We believe the natural next step will be increasing the level of inbound investment to support the current trading relationship. It’s important the Government has explicitly recognised the need to build and broaden that investment base and it’s fortunate for New Zealand we have a strong foundation on which to build our investment relationship with China at a time when many of New Zealand’s traditional sources of investment are experiencing significant difficulties.

“Yet, we must remember this remains a competitive environment,” warns Mr Rice. “Countries around the world are targeting China as they all seek to strengthen ties with the Chinese economy which continues to grow. The full support of the Government is critical to taking investment from China to another level.

“At PwC, we support the Government’s NZ Inc China Strategy launch. We’ve been working hard to facilitate closer relationships between China and New Zealand for mutual benefit - as shown by the China Development Bank’s recent signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with PwC. It’s great to see Hon John Key and the Government setting some ambitious targets for growing the relationship with China and being prepared to put the governments full support to achieving these targets.” concludes Mr Rice.
