Dunedin - Home of Coffee Connoisseurs

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Dunedin - Home of Coffee Connoisseurs

New Zealand’s coffee connoisseurs live in Dunedin according to the findings of an independent survey.

The survey by Canstar Blue asked kiwis to rate their satisfaction with the coffee shop where they had most recently purchased a coffee. Mojo Café with locations in Wellington, Palmerston North, Christchurch and Dunedin received five star ratings for overall satisfaction, service, ambience and taste. Rival, Coffee Culture with stores in Christchurch, Lincoln, Timaru and Rangiora was also awarded five stars for service and ambience. Muffin Break received five stars for taste. Competitors, McDonalds McCafe scored five stars for value and Starbucks was awarded five stars for their range.

Derek Bonnar CANSTAR – New Zealand National Manager said the survey revealed that Dunedin residents were more likely at 38% to consider themselves to be coffee connoisseurs than other kiwis. Dunedin coffee drinkers are also the most likely at 64% to go out of their way for their caffeine fix. Christchurch residents at 59% are also willing to pull out all the stops to buy a good cup of coffee, followed by 58% of Aucklanders and 57% of Wellingtonians. Age wise, Gen X coffee drinkers are the most likely to head across town for that special brew at 62%.

“Also of interest were the numbers of people using cafes as a venue for business meetings. Overall 16% of those surveyed said they regularly hold business meetings in a local cafe. Aucklanders were the most likely at 19% to swap the boardroom for the café, followed by 18% of Wellingtonians.

“Visiting cafes certainly seems to be ingrained in the kiwi culture; with 47% of Gen Y survey respondents saying they visit the same café multiple times a week. Regionally, Aucklanders were the most likely to buy their favourite brew at the same café multiple times a week. Stopping drinking coffee was also on the agenda for some kiwis, however, 13% of our survey respondents confessed they had unsuccessfully tried to stop drinking coffee in the last 12 months. Eleven percent also feel stressed when they think about how much money they spend on coffee each week,” says Derek.

Canstar Blue commissions Colmar Brunton Australia to survey 2,500 New Zealand consumers every few months to measure their satisfaction across a range of products and services. The outcomes reported are the results from consumers who have purchased a coffee within the last 12 months, within the survey group - in this case, 1451 people. Coffee shops must receive at least 30 responses to be included.

Canstar Blue is a division of financial research and ratings company, CANSTAR which has been operating in New Zealand for nearly a decade.

Canstar Blue provides New Zealanders with the latest customer satisfaction ratings on products and services free of charge via the website www.canstarblueco.nz.

“Consumers will undoubtedly feel more confident about a purchase if hundreds of other Kiwis rate it highly,” said Derek.
