Takatu Lodge & Vineyard named one of the best hotels in the world

Auckland’s Takatu Lodge and Vineyard has been listed as one of the 101 best hotels in the world in the exclusive Tatler UK Travel Guide 2012.

The five star lodge and vineyard is one of only four New Zealand properties to be included in the prestigious guide, and the only one in the Auckland region.

Featured in the ‘Finders Keepers’ section, Takatu sits alongside the best accommodation from around the world, from new boutique hotels in Europe to ever-popular classics like The Ritz in London.

Takatu owners Heather and John Forsman are thrilled to be included in such an esteemed travel publication.

“To be internationally acknowledged as a world-class product is a huge achievement for us. We have worked hard to bring the lodge up to the highest standards, to give travellers from around the world a relaxing, rejuvenating and memorable stay,” says Mrs Forsman.

Takatu Lodge and Vineyard is set in the boutique village of Matakana, just under an hour from central Auckland. The region is known for its beautiful beaches, vineyards and thriving art scene, and is also making a name for itself as a gourmet ‘slow food’ destination.

The property is a working vineyard and the focus of the lodge – which has just four exclusive guest rooms – is on elegance and comfort in a peaceful and picturesque setting.

The Tatler travel guide had high praise for Takatu, saying: “This is a bright little lodge of soft beauty and delicate colours, a pocket haven that’s dodged the real world.”

Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development (ATEED) Manager Tourism Jason Hill says it confirms that Auckland is a destination that provides first rate visitor experiences.

“Takatu’s achievement shows that Auckland’s accommodation can more than hold its own against the best in the world. It also highlights the growing popularity of the Matakana area, which offers a unique experience away from the hustle and bustle of the city.”

Takatu’s three high-end wines are also internationally successful – they are sold in Michelin Star restaurants in London, Sydney and Melbourne, as well as in top chef Peter Gordon’s restaurants. They are also on offer in some 70 restaurants throughout New Zealand.
