Freight Information Gathering report released

Frieght Information Gathering report released

Date: 12 March 2012

MEDIA RELEASE

The Ministry of Transport has released its first quarterly report on containerised freight movements around New Zealand.

The Freight Information Gathering System report provides an overview of containerised freight movements around New Zealand, including freight volumes, the balance of exports and imports, and the mode of transport used to carry cargo in and out of ports.

The Ministry launched the project in 2010 and has been working with several ports on its development.

The Ministry worked with Ports of Auckland, Port of Tauranga, Port Taranaki, Port of Napier and Port Nelson on the first report on the July – September 2011 quarter – monitoring almost 300,000 container movements.

“Up until now there has only been limited information available on freight movements around New Zealand,” said Ministry of Transport General Manager Aviation and Maritime Bruce Johnson.

“This report builds on information currently provided by Statistics New Zealand while making valuable new information on freight movements available for the first time.

“As a nation far from our export markets, increasing freight efficiency is a priority and the information this report provides will make a significant contribution to freight industry knowledge to guide future decisions.”

The Ministry of Transport will update the report each quarter with the next (October December 2011) report due to be published shortly. In future the Freight Information Gathering System will also be expanded to include bulk freight movements.
