Everyone can explore ‘The Rock’ during the last week of March

Wellington Airport is so proud of The Rock and its achievements they want to ensure everyone gets the opportunity to see it by opening the doors for the public during the last week of March.

The opening times for everyone to explore The Rock are between 10am-12pm and 5pm-7pm daily, from Monday 26 March until Saturday 31 March. Complimentary parking will also be provided to people coming to view The Rock.

“It is fantastic to look back over the five year development and see The Rock’s achievements. Not only has it doubled international passenger capacity and vastly improved passengers’ facilitation and experience, but it has created an award winning and unforgettable talking point for visitors and Wellingtonians alike,” said John Howarth, Chief Operating Officer.

The Rock has now won 12 awards, the most prestigious being the Transport Category for the World Festival of Interiors at the 2011 World Architecture Festival in Barcelona. It was also recently named the fourth best terminal in the world by Frommers in USA Today, and the Airport wants to make sure you get to see it.

“We have opened The Rock up for a whole week to ensure everyone who wants to have a peek inside a world recognised terminal can, as well as provide a great, free family outing,” said Mr Howarth.

Everyone can enter through International Departures and JR/Duty Free to get the full international departure experience. The Mojo café in The Rock will also be open, so visitors can enjoy a coffee and tasty café fare. They will also get to see the special fish tank hosting a group of the local south coast fish who are cared for by the Island Bay Marine Education Centre.

By 2030 Wellington Airport’s passenger numbers will double to 10 million. The Rock was developed in preparation for the Rugby World Cup 2011 to double international processing capacity and meet future demand. It has already successfully managed the Airport’s busiest day ever hosting three times the number of daily international passengers.
