New City Gallery Wellington Director Announced
After a great deal of speculation and guesswork within the art world Wellington Museum Trust Chief Executive Pat Stuart is pleased to announce that Elizabeth Caldwell will take up the reigns at City Gallery Wellington from July 2012.
“We are delighted Elizabeth has accepted the challenge of leading City Gallery Wellington into the future. She has both the leadership skills and commitment to contemporary art that will ensure the gallery will continue to flourish,” she says.
Currently the Director of the Dunedin Public Art Gallery, Ms Caldwell will bring over 20 years experience in the New Zealand visual arts sector to the Wellington based role.
Ms Caldwell has said that she is very excited to be taking up this post, “City Gallery Wellington has established a reputation for delivering high quality contemporary art exhibitions. I look forward to working with the team and continuing to bring the very best of international and national art to the Wellington public.”
No stranger to the capital, Ms Caldwell has worked as the Senior Curator Visual Art and Collection Services at the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, and as the Arts Adviser for Visual Art and Craft/Object Art at Creative New Zealand.
She was previously the Curator of Contemporary Art at the Robert McDougall Art Gallery (now Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetu) and her academic qualifications include an MA in Art History from the University of Canterbury, Diploma of Secondary Teaching (Christchurch College of Education) and a Postgraduate Diploma in Art Curatorial Studies (University of Melbourne).
Pat Stuart says, “There was a very strong field of candidates from within New Zealand and overseas. The search process started in late January 2012.”
The previous City Gallery Wellington Director Paula Savage finished at City Gallery on 23 February after 20 years in the role. Ms Caldwell will take up the position in July 2012.
