Rail union hopeful of Picton-Christchurch patronage pickup

Media Release: Rail & Maritime Transport Union
Thursday April 5, 2012

Rail union hopeful of a pickup in patronage between Picton and Christchurch

The Rail and Maritime Transport Union says it is disappointing but understandable that KiwiRail is moving to reduce passenger services from Picton to Christchurch.

KiwiRail has today announced plans to run the Coastal Pacific train service from Picton to Christchurch on Fridays to Mondays only over winter.

“The loss of the service Tuesday to Thursday will be disappointing for people wanting to travel South by rail,” RMTU General Secretary Wayne Butson said.

He said the union was aware of the move, and commended KiwiRail for not cutting back staff as a result of the service reduction over winter.

“KiwiRail is taking a long term view that a rebuilt Christchurch will see increased demand. We share their hope that patronage will increase to the point where the service can operate 7 days a week,” Wayne Butson said.
