RCN e-Cycle e-Waste Robot Gets a Name
Winning name, E.R.I.C., submitted by 13 year old Brendan Hassall from Waitati
Auckland, 12 April, 2012 – RCN e-Cycle’s new e-Waste robot now has a name, E.R.I.C. (e-waste recycling is cool). The name was selected after a two-week nationwide contest that saw over 300 submissions from across New Zealand. The youngest entrant was three years old and the oldest 65.
Winner, Brendan Hassall, from Waitati, was ecstatic and said that the name was actually a group effort by his family. His 10-year-old brother Cam brought home news of the contest in his school newsletter and they all contributed with ideas. “We were looking for something short and easy to remember that tied in with e-waste, said Brendan, who promised he’d share his new Samsung Galaxy Tablet with his family.”
“Selection of the winning name was difficult with many inspirational submissions,” said RCN e-Cycle spokesperson, Tania Pilkinton. “We chose E.R.I.C. because it ties in really well with our campaign. It also fits the robot, which is constructed entirely from e-waste.”
Inspiration ranged from Star Wars to Maori names and several tied in to end of life electronics.
“We were really pleased with the large range of people who took part in the contest and were surprised to see how widespread the entries were, covering every major metropolitan area in New Zealand as well as many of the outlying rural areas.”
Over the next few months E.R.I.C. will be out and about meeting and greeting the public at new and existing RCN e-Cycle sites.
About RCN e-Cycle
Electronic waste is one of the fastest growing and most toxic waste streams. Electronics also contain precious resources which when landfilled cannot be recovered.
RCN e-Cycle was set up to provide a complete solution in New Zealand, giving the public and small businesses a choice that didn’t exist in the past. At present, there is a network of 29 drop-off sites throughout New Zealand with more in development.
RCN Group and Community Recycling Network (CRN) have received funding from the Ministry for the Environment to form the RCN e-Cycle scheme, and are recognised as industry leaders in the disposal of electronic items.
