Canterbury Museum to close temporarily

Canterbury Museum to close temporarily

The Canterbury Museum Trust Board has today announced the temporary closure of Canterbury Museum until further notice whilst further engineering reports are commissioned and assessed.

Board Chair Michael McEvedy made the announcement on behalf of the Board today, stating the closure is a temporary measure only until further investigations into the structural integrity of two areas of the Museum have been considered.

The Board received a final report today and met with urgency to make a decision on all the various engineering assessments, peer reviews and opinions.

Michael McEvedy says the Board has made the decision after in-depth consideration of all the information that has been made available to them – the decision is cautious and conservative but the right thing to do.

“The decision was made with heavy heart to temporarily close the Museum. This temporary closure of the Museum has not been made lightly. The decision has been driven by the Board’s duty to ensure that public safety remains the priority at all times.

The Museum is briefing key partners and stakeholders this evening and Director Anthony Wright will be available to discuss the situation in more depth tomorrow.
