Global food industry, Maori enterprise and extensive governance experience will be brought to the Sealord Group board table by its two new directors.
From June, Wally Stone and Bob Major will serve on the board chaired by Matanuku Mahuika and have been appointed by Aotearoa Fisheries Limited (AFL) which holds a 50% interest in Sealord on behalf of all Maori. Keith Sutton has also been reappointed to the board, having served as an alternate for the last three years.
Stone has held a number of senior positions in both commercial and non-profit organisations and is a Fellow of the New Zealand Institute of Management (FNZIM) and an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit (ONZM).
He is the chairman of Whale Watch Kaikoura and has chaired the Kaikoura Investment Trust, the Ngai Tahu Group Board and the New Zealand Tourism Board.
Serving on the board of this important asset is yet another way for him to contribute to the economic development of Maori.
“Sealord has consistently delivered its dividend to shareholders and has worked hard to position the business for future growth, I look forward to being part of this growth,” said Stone.
Major brings extensive experience of New Zealand primary industry and exporting after more than 30 years in the dairy industry including senior executive roles for Fonterra in markets around the globe.
He is currently chairman of The Mud House Wine Group and Director of Westland Milk Products and Barker Food Processors Ltd.
Major’s export experience and work on innovative joint ventures in the dairy industry will be invaluable to Sealord.
“Primary products remain one of New Zealand’s greatest assets and Sealord’s sustainable, high quality products are sought after around the world. I believe its strategic focus on being Australia and New Zealand’s leading seafood company is a worthy and achievable goal and look forward to helping govern Sealord’s growth,” said Major.
AFL also reappointment Keith Sutton to the Sealord board for a term of 12 months. Sutton is an experienced director with a strong background in the finance and primary sectors. He served as a director on the Sealord board from 2002 to 2008 and until December last year was a director of AFL.
Sutton is currently a member of the advisory board to the Maori Trustee, a director of Wellington International Airport, Chairman of Taranaki Investment Management Limited and Governor of Van Diemen’s Land Company Limited in Tasmania.
