Silver Fern Farms Praises KPMG 2012 Agribusiness Agenda

Silver Fern Farms Praises KPMG 2012 Agribusiness Agenda

Silver Fern Farms chairman, Eoin Garden, today wholeheartedly agreed with the agenda recommendations, particularly the call to review the structure and value of industry good organisations with the potential for a Single Industry Good Organisation (SIGO), the need for independent directors and a review of the levy systems.

Whilst the report covered all primary sectors it was clear that the key recommendations would be of great value to the meat industry said Mr Garden.

“We had previously identified the opportunity to create better focus and collaboration between Beef+Lamb, Federated Farmers and the Meat Industry Association, to establish a model that could best work alongside government agencies like the Ministry for Primary Industries, Ministry for Foreign Affairs and Trade and NZ Trade and Enterprise - the KPMG report confirms our thinking” said Mr Garden.

Mr Garden also noted the focus on collaboration amongst sector participants and believes that in the meat industry this continues to be thwarted by competitive drivers and different ownership models. “The focus of the report clearly indicates that leadership should start from the top and it’s time the leaders of the meat sector industry good bodies got in behind these recommendations and demonstrated leadership and value to all levy payers”.

Silver Fern Farms continues to implement its “plate to pasture" strategy which is aligned to the Red Meat Strategy launched last year, and sees the uptake and implementation of the latest KPMG recommendations as being key to the ultimate success of that Red Meat Sector Strategy.

“This is the 4th such report in the last 3 years which continues to identify opportunities for the red meat sector. All four agree that to get on with creating value for farmers and New Zealand we need the industry good leaders to start leading with actions, not talk” said Mr Garden.
