Ultrafast Fibre network build begins in Cambridge and Te Awamutu

Ultrafast Fibre Ltd will begin construction of its ultra-fast broadband (UFB) network during the week starting 2nd July in both Cambridge and Te Awamutu.

Works will begin in central Cambridge, while initial work in Te Awamutu will commence in the southern area of town. Works will continue in both towns over the next few years and will be completed in stages.

Ultrafast Fibre’s 110 kilometre network in Cambridge will include 60km of underground cable and 50km of overhead cable.

The network in Te Awamutu will total 90 kilometres and includes 60km of underground cable and 30km of overhead cable.

In total, the local fibre network will pass 6800 premises in Cambridge and 5300 in Te Awamutu by the time each build is completed.

“The first premises in both Cambridge and Te Awamutu can start connecting to our local fibre network from September, later this year,” says Ultrafast Fibre Ltd CEO and Cambridge resident, Maxine Elliott.

Maxine Elliott says as network construction gets underway, the company is working to ensure the rollout is the least disruptive as possible.

“People will begin to see our crews working throughout both towns. Some of this work involves digging small trenches in front of properties to lay the fibre and closing them back up again. Other work involves stringing cable along overhead lines.

“Our aim is to construct the local fibre network as quickly and efficiently as possible, with minimal disruption to people in the community,” she explains.

In addition to laying fibre in Cambridge and Te Awamutu, Ultrafast Fibre Ltd is also laying fibre in Hamilton, Tokoroa, New Plymouth, Wanganui, Hawera and Tauranga.

A combined total of 3,000 kilometres of fibre will be laid in all eight centres.
