Kathmandu the listed outdoor clothing and equipment retailer today opened its new national Distribution Centre at Portlink in Christchurch, doubling its warehouse capacity to improve efficiency of managing stock in New Zealand.

Chief Executive Peter Halkett said the Distribution Centre was transformational for Kathmandu and a step change in its capability.

“As well as increasing our capacity the Centre has allowed us to introduce new technology and work practices to improve efficiency.”

The Portlink Centre will support Kathmandu’s on-going store roll-out program, the expansion of the company’s product range, and its rapidly growing online business.

“As a multi-channel offer becomes more important for our customers we want to meet that demand and we now have a large dedicated area which we can scale up as our online sales continue to grow,” Mr Halkett said.

The new Distribution Centre gives Kathmandu the potential to ship internationally.

The old Distribution Centre had been operating in Christchurch since 2000 when Kathmandu only had nine stores in New Zealand. It now operates 44.

The Distribution Centre meets the highest earthquake standards. It has substantial seismic wiring, which holds the warehouse racking in place, and the racks are bolted to the floor.

The drive-thru canopy area which is 1000 sqm and extends out 15 metres is snow loading compliant. Kathmandu is committed to sustainability with energy efficient lighting installed and increased translucent panels to let in natural light.

Mr Halkett said that Kathmandu remains committed to Christchurch and wants to play its part in the rebuilding of the city.
