New vehicle sales accelerate throughout June

Media Release 5 July 2012

New vehicle sales accelerate throughout June

Motor Trade Association (MTA) says June turned out to be another strong month for new vehicle sales.

Last month, 10,101 new vehicles were sold overall, compared to 7,652 in June 2011, an increase of 2,449 units (32 percent). Year to date, overall sales are up by 7,837 units (19 percent).

MTA spokesperson Ian Stronach said “The Field Days Specials offered by distributors has worked well to draw in buyers. There’s good availability and solid support from distributors, which means that dealers have been able to provide some very good offers to entice buyers. While some traditional commercial models fared really well in June, many models that are not usually associated with farming activities also enjoyed a good month.”

New car sales were well ahead with sales of 7,142 units up 1,777 units (33 percent), compared to the same month last year. This was the strongest June sales month since 2005. For the year to date, new car sales are ahead of 2011 by 6,854 units (22 percent).

New commercial vehicle sales of 2,959 units were up 672 units (29 percent) compared to June 2011. Year to date, overall new commercial sales are ahead of 2011 by 983 units (9 percent).

“The Field Days season is now well and truly entrenched in buyers’ minds, and although there are some who obviously wait for it, this doesn’t appear to be having much affect as sales have lifted for virtually the whole year so far. These recent figures show that the new vehicle market is well on the way to recovery,” said Stronach.
