Solid Energy applauds Newmont operation to bring miners out safely

Solid Energy Chief Executive Officer, Dr Don Elder, says that Newmont Mining is to be congratulated for its successful operation to bring 28 miners safely out of its Trio Mine, Waihi.

“All industries have hazards that must be dealt with to ensure the safety of workers. Underground mining poses no more risks to worker safety than any other comparable industry provided that the right systems, equipment, infrastructure and training are in place and effective. Every company has the responsibility to ensure its operations meet these expectations. Government’s role is to set standards and provide independent assurance, not to replace companies’ responsibility for safety.

“Newmont is a first class mining company. We were watching closely and were confident that it would have everything in place – capable trained people, systems and equipment – to deal successfully with the situation. Newmont has demonstrated today that good modern mining practices are able to ensure worker safety even if unexpected events occur.

“We are pleased that, although we despatched a Mines Rescue crew from our Huntly East Mine, it was not required,” Dr Elder said.
