MWH Global Clocks Up Wins at INNOVATE New Zealand Awards

Nelson, 31 July 2012 – MWH Global the consulting, engineering and construction company, took top honours at the Association of Consulting Engineers New Zealand (ACENZ) INNOVATE NZ awards last night.

The ACENZ President’s Award 2012 was awarded to Allan Leahy, MWH principal technical specialist (stormwater) in recognition of his outstanding service and special efforts performed on behalf of ACENZ; in particular, for his work as the convenor of the ACENZ awards judging panel for the past five years and for his work managing the potential impacts of land use changes on stormwater in New Zealand.

Winning gold for its innovation and effectiveness, KiwiRap, the New Zealand Road Assessment Programme developed by MWH for the NZ Transport Agency, provides a highly effective measure of the safety of New Zealand’s road infrastructure. The system, using environmental aspects, can measure road safety proactively, whereas previous assessment could only be made using crash statistics.

All 10,000 kilometres of the non-urban State Highway System has been given star ratings to assess safety and also to predict the potential impact on safety before any road changes are made. A star rating safety system is now in use in over 70 countries and KiwiRap is being promoted as the preferred approach to international road safety assessment.

The Hastings Wastewater Treatment Plant, developed by MWH for Hastings District Council, took a merit award for the community engagement, design and development of the facility that met with the cultural considerations of the tangata whenua community, the standards of the consenting authority and was affordable by the Council.

In addition, the Franz Josef and Fox Glacier walkways and cycleways, the James Road Bridge in Golden Bay Tasman and Jill Harrison, New Zealand management consulting team leader for MWH, were all finalists in the 2012 awards.
