Napier Boys’ Celebrates Unison 1st XV Challenge Win
Monday 24 September, 2012 – Napier Boys’ High School won the inaugural Unison 1st XV Challenge Cup at Friday night’s curtain raiser game at McLean Park.
Napier Boys came away with a 26-15 win against Hastings Boys’ High School 1st XV, ahead of the Magpies vs Bay of Plenty home game.
Napier Boys’ 1st XV coach, Russell Hewitt said the win was hard earned by the team.
“The win was a great ending to the season. It has been a long season for the boys, and this was a good send off for our year 13 boys especially.”
The Unison 1st XV Challenge Cup is an extension to Unison’s sponsorship of the Hawke’s Bay Rugby Union’s junior programme.
The competition offered both A and B grade 1st XV teams the opportunity to contest the Unison 1st XV Challenge Cup and Shield, with finals for both grades being played on the Magpies’ home grounds.
“It has been great to have Unison on board for the competition this year. It has added more weight to the season to have their support,” said Mr Hewitt.
Napier Boys’ 1st XV Rugby Manager, Del Whyte commended the Hastings team for a great game.
“Hats off to Hastings Boys, they hadn’t played for a long time…they played really well.”
Michael Buckley and Ollie Penno each scored tries for the Napier side, with Ethan Brady kicking two successful conversions and four penalties, to see Napier Boys take the win.
The winning team was presented with the Unison 1st XV Challenge Cup, a medal for each player and a $1000 sports gear voucher courtesy of Unison. Runner up, Hastings Boys received a $500 sports gear voucher courtesy of the Hawke’s Bay Rugby Union.
