Judges select South Auckland business finalists

Judges select South business finalists

A number of Auckland South businesses affected in recent years by a tough economic climate are now thriving say the judges in this year’s local business awards.

Eighteen businesses were last night announced as finalists in the 2012 Westpac Auckland South Business awards at a special event at Villa Maria Estate in Mangere.

Finalists in the Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development (ATEED)-run awards’ nine categories include a broad mix of businesses incorporating engineering, construction, manufacturing and retail sectors.

Convener of judges, John Cunningham, says that like previous years, the quality of finalists is high and showcases the breadth of businesses in the area.

“Every year we get a great cross section of large and small businesses entering, so it’s good to see that reflected in the finalist lineup,” says Mr Cunningham.

“It is great to see so many industries having a resurgence after a harsh few years. Now they are in the position to embrace opportunities and shape themselves to be even more successful.”

The awards attracted 94 entries across in a revitalised format showcasing new categories and a new judging system.

ATEED’s Manager Business Growth – South, Yvette Hellyer, says Auckland South’s business diversity is a winner for the area.

“It’s evident by the quality of this year’s finalists that the local business community is strong across many industries. This is a good sign for the future of the local economy and the region.

“The business awards are an important growth tool for business, providing a way to review their performance, look for opportunities to grow, build on their capability and celebrate success,” says Ms Hellyer.

Ian Blair, General Manager Business Banking for Westpac – the awards’ major sponsor – is impressed with the calibre of finalists.

“These awards are a pinnacle in the Auckland South business community, which is why Westpac is proud to be a supporter of the awards here and in other areas around the country,” says Mr Blair.

“This year’s finalists are a reflection of this outstanding local business hub, and we’re looking forward to unveiling the winners later this year.”

Winners will be announced at a black-tie gala dinner on Friday, 16 November 2012. Tickets are available at www.ateed.co.nz/awards.
