NETWORK SUMMARY for week ending 20 October 2012

ELECTRICITY
It has been another busy week for our electricity network. The week saw a total of nine car v poles including incidents at St Johns, Mangere East, Piha and a serious accident in Glen Eden. An incident in New Lynn saw a car on top of a transformer. Response crews also attended an accident in Mt Eden East where a rubbish truck brought down lines. In all cases we made the sites safe and repaired equipment to minimise disruption to customers.

It was also a busy week for our faults crews with five building fires across this city. Crews also attended a number of callouts across Auckland where lines were brought down by trees following high winds, an incident in Green Bay where a house was struck by lightning and two incidents when a car brought down lines after hitting a house in Flat Bush and a truck brought down lines in Hillsborough.

Crews also repaired equipment and feeders throughout Auckland including network lines in Henderson which were being struck by a large stand of bamboo at the side of the road.

GAS TRANSMISSION AND DISTRIBUTION
There were five third party strikes on our gas distribution network this week, including an incident in Te Awamutu when a contractor caused a leak while looking for a water pipe. Crews attended a gas leak after someone tampered with the copper pipes, a leak caused when a stove was stolen leaving open gas pipes in its wake, and a gas line incident in Kohimarama. In all cases fault crews made sites safe and repaired the equipment. Please take care around our gas network and call 0508 B4 U WORK (248 967) or 0800 B4 U DIG if outside Auckland.

PROJECT UPDATE
Pt Chevalier substation upgrade - Vector’s capital project’s group have recently completed work on the final stage of a long running project to upgrade the equipment at Pt Chevalier zone substation. The most recently completed areas include the replacement of circuit breakers and main incomer protection devices within the 11kV switchboard, the. This project brings with it the benefit of more reliable, faster protection against faults at the substation (electronic instead of mechanical relays), arc detection capability in all panels and safer, more reliable circuit breakers (vacuum insulated instead of the old oil insulated type). Commissioning was complex with multiple switching operations required before each individual panel could be de-energised and upgraded. Over the past three years, the vast majority of equipment at this substation has been upgraded whilst the substation has remained in operation. (Photos available)
