Forest & Bird’s Denniston Plateau appeal begins

Forest & Bird’s bid to save the West Coast’s Denniston Plateau from an open-cast coal mine enters the court room on Monday 29 October. It has been 13 months since Forest & Bird lodged an appeal against the resource consents granted to Australian mining company Bathurst Resources.

Bathurst Resources intends to mine coal across 150ha of the plateau. Denniston Plateau lies on public conservation land and Forest & Bird believes its high conservation values, including rare and endangered species and globally-unique ecosystems, means it should be protected from mining.

Forest & Bird is working to have the plateau permanently protected as a reserve.
West Coast Environment Network is also appealing consents.

The Environment Court hearing will be held over six weeks, including three weeks in the Cambridge Terrace Court House in Christchurch and one week in the Greymouth District Court.
