Pike River Implementation Plan Released

The Government has released the Pike River Implementation Plan. This details how and when Government will respond to the recommendations of the Royal Commission on the Pike River Coal Mine Tragedy.

An Expert Reference Group will provide expert subject matter advice and independent scrutiny as the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment develops a new and stronger regulatory framework for mining in New Zealand.

Changes to CMA Bill reflect Pike River report

Cabinet has approved further changes to the Crown Minerals (Permitting and Crown Land) Bill currently before the Commerce Committee, Energy and Resources Minister Phil Heatley says.

A Supplementary Order Paper recommends changes to current legislation to strengthen the Bill in light of the report of the Royal Commission on the Pike River Coal Mine Tragedy.

The Royal Commission's report endorses the proposals being progressed through the current review of the Crown Minerals Regime and reflected in the Bill being considered by the Commerce Committee.

It also recommended that regulators need to collaborate to ensure that health and safety is considered as early as possible and before permits are issued, and that the Crown Minerals Regime should be changed to ensure that health and safety is an integral part of permit allocation.

Northland 2012 Competitive Tender is now closed.
----------------------------------

An NZP&M panel is now evaluating applications for each block.

Applications will be evaluated on a number of criteria, as set out in the Invitation for Bids.

We expect to announce any permits awarded in April 2013.

Notice of Land Closure
----------------------------------

Notice is given that, in accordance with clause 3.9 of the Minerals Programme for Minerals (Excluding Petroleum) 2008, the areas identified in the 6 December notice are closed to permit applications for metallic minerals under the Crown Minerals Act 1991 for a period of 17 months.

It is the Minister's intention to consider these areas of land for competitive tender allocation for mineral exploration.
