Auckland Airport Supports Future Director Scheme

Media Release | 20 March 2013
Auckland Airport Supports Future Director Scheme

Developing the next generation of governance talent vital to New Zealand economic performance

Auckland Airport announced today that it is supporting a new Future Director Scheme, with an aspiring director, Sheridan Broadbent, already experiencing Auckland Airport Board meetings for the 2012 calendar year. Ms Broadbent is General Manager Strategy and Business Technology at Genesis Energy.

Joan Withers, the Chair of Auckland Airport, said, “We strongly believe in the value of this concept, which has been conceived of by Michael Stiassny, Sir Stephen Tindall and the New Zealand Shareholders’ Association.”

The Future Director Scheme seeks to identify talented young executives with strong potential to succeed in a governance role, and provide them with opportunities to observe and participate in Boardroom discussions. While the aspiring directors participate in real discussions, they do not have a role in Board decision making, and Auckland Airport has protocols in place that prevent future director participants becoming "deemed directors".

Mrs Withers said, “This scheme will assist in promoting diversity of leadership, and development of governance talent, by bringing forward people with excellent business skills and insights, but without necessarily having the governance experience or track record. Sheridan has already demonstrated an ability to understand and contribute to Board discussions on key strategic issues.”

Ms Broadbent was delighted to be given the opportunity to develop her governance skills at Auckland Airport. Ms Broadbent said, “I would like to thank the Board of Auckland Airport and my employer, Genesis Energy, for enabling me to pursue this brilliant opportunity at this stage in my career.”
