FGC supports Govt's sunbed move

Media release from NZ Food & Grocery Council

FGC supports Govt's sunbed move

The Food & Grocery Council (FGC) strongly supports the Government’s move to prohibit children and young people under the age of 18 from using commercial sunbeds.

"Some FGC member companies produce and market the major brands of sunscreen products in New Zealand," Mrs Rich says. "As part of a wider concern about sun exposure and health, those members have been concerned for several years at the increased use of sunbeds by young people.

"Allowing them to use these services for whatever reason is absolutely counter to important SunSmart campaign messages designed to inform Kiwis about the importance of minimising their exposure to the sun’s harmful rays.

"Whether it be by slapping on generous amounts of sunscreen or staying out of the sun altogether, New Zealanders can do more to reduce their exposure, and today’s announcement will make a difference to that.

"New Zealand and Australia have the highest melanoma rates in the world so this decision can only result in better health outcomes."
