Achievements Continue With New VW Golf
The NZ Automobile Association and the NZ Transport Agency are welcoming the addition of another top safety rated vehicle to the New Zealand car market, with the announcement today that the new Volkswagen Golf has been awarded the maximum 5 star Australasian New Car Assessment Programme (ANCAP) safety rating.
The new Golf VII offers a broad range of safety assist technologies (SAT) which puts it ahead of current safety requirements to be awarded 5 stars.
NZTA Access and Use Group Manager Celia Patrick says
improving the safety of the country’s vehicle fleet was
part of New Zealand’s Safer Journeys strategy and
it was great news that the range of top safety-rated cars
was continuing to grow.
"Crash statistics show that
occupants of 4 or 5 star-rated vehicles are much less likely
to receive life-threatening injuries in a crash than
occupants of lower rated vehicles.
“With today's
safety technology 5 star ratings are increasingly becoming
the norm and we urge people to buy the safest vehicle they
can afford.”
AA Motoring Services General Manager
Stella Stocks says Volkswagen has performed well in the
safety stakes for the last 20 years and continues to lift
its game.
“This 5 star ANCAP safety rating adds to the line of Golf models which have held this top level of safety in New Zealand since the Golf V was released in 2005,” Ms Stocks says.
“The latest generation takes safety a step further and this is a testament to Volkswagen has shown it’s committed to prioritising safety for its customers and ensuring that this level of quality remains affordable.”
In addition to performing well in the physical crash tests, on board the Golf are a range of advanced safety technologies including radar-based adaptive cruise control (ACC), city emergency braking or AEB as well as a multi-collision braking system.
Multi-collision braking applies the brakes after a crash to prevent the car rolling into further danger.
The 5 star ANCAP safety rating for the Golf VII applies to all petrol variants. Diesel variants remain unrated.
ANCAP is supported by all Australian and New Zealand motoring clubs, the Australian Government, the New Zealand Government, all Australian state governments, the Victorian Transport Accident Commission, NRMA Insurance and the FIA Foundation.
The full list of ANCAP’s vehicle safety ratings, other vehicle safety information and the specifications of the rated vehicles are available online at aa.co.nz or rightcar.govt.nz.
