Kia Koup Turbo Unveiled

Kia Koup Turbo Unveiled

A svelte new 2-door Koup, bristling with turbocharged power has been unveiled by Kia Motors.

The all-new Kia Cerato Koup Turbo had its recent world premier in New York Auto Show, featuring European-inspired design and performance to match, thanks to a 1.6-litre GDI turbocharged engine developing 150kW (201hp) available in a high-performance version, making it the most powerful Kia Koup ever.

Todd McDonald, General Manager for Kia Motors New Zealand, says the petrol turbocharged model is an exciting addition to the Kia range.

“The styling has ratcheted up another notch and with the availability of even more performance to match those sporty looks, the new Koup Turbo is a real winner,” says Mr McDonald.

The turbocharged powerplant produces 150kW (201hp) at 6,000 rpm and 264Nm of torque between 1,750-4,500 rpm, delivering extraordinary driving flexibility. The advanced powertrain features double overhead cams with dual continuously variable valve timing to help improve efficiency and performance.

To test the turbo engine’s durability, a number of test units were run for 300 continuous hours at redline under full load then for an additional 20 hours at 10% above redline under full load to ensure they would perform to the maximum and beyond with complete dependability.

In addition to the turbocharged engine, Kia has upgraded the standard 2-litre power plant to a new GDi (gasoline direct injection) unit that also develops more power than its predecessor. Transmission options are 6-speed sequential shift automatic, with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters, or a 6-speed manual.

Suspension is also developed further to deliver more refined and sportier handling, and the steering is enhanced with the new FlexSteer system that enables the driver to dial up steering assistance to suit the road conditions.

Created by the Kia Motors design studio in California, under the direction of President and Chief Design Officer Peter Schreyer, the Koup’s sporty two-door profile, swooping roofline and large 18-inch alloy wheels give it an athletic and aggressive stance that continues Kia’s tradition as a design leader.

Kia says the new Koup is equipped with even more high-tech features, including LED daytime lighting and reversing camera.
