Power outage in Cambridge

Transpower advises that there is currently a power outage affecting the Cambridge area following an explosion at the Cambridge substation around 12am this morning, which caused substantial damage to its 11 kV indoor switchgear.

Transpower has been on site overnight attempting to rebuild the switchgear, a critical component to feeding electricity to the Cambridge area.

It is not yet possible to provide a restoration time given the amount of damage caused however the 12,000 homes and businesses affected in the Cambridge area should prepare for power not being restored until at least midday today.

Further updates will be provided as information becomes available.
