Rise in online job vacancies in April

Online job vacancies increased in April following a fall in March, according to the latest Jobs Online report from the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment.

The latest seasonally adjusted results show that skilled vacancies advertised online rose by 5.4 percent in April and all online job vacancies increased by 6.5 percent. While there is some month to month variation in the seasonally adjusted series, the trend in skilled vacancies has been largely flat since April 2012.

Skilled vacancies increased in most industry groups. The sales, retail, marketing and advertising industry had one of the largest monthly rise (up 14.0 percent), followed by hospitality and tourism (up 11.8 percent). The only fall was in the constructions and engineering industry (down 4.3 percent).

The biggest increase was in Auckland (up 8.2 percent), followed by Canterbury (up 6.6 percent). The North Island – excluding Auckland and Wellington – also had a large increase (up 6.1 percent). There were moderate increases in South Island – excluding Canterbury (up 4.5 percent) and in Wellington (up 3.9 percent).

Vacancies in Canterbury increased over the year (up by 16.9 percent). The Information technology industry showed the greatest increase (up 59.9 percent) with sales, retail, marketing and advertising (up 12.0 percent). The construction and engineering industry which grew moderately over the year (up 6.8 percent), has fallen off in recent months.

“IT and sales vacancies continue to grow in Canterbury, contributing to a broad increase in skilled vacancies in the region” said the Ministry’s Manager of Labour Market and Business Performance, David Paterson.
