Consent Granted For New $20m Supermarket At Prestons, Christchurch

Foodstuffs South Island has been granted resource consent to build and operate a New World supermarket with accompanying retail space and car parks on the corner of Prestons Road and Marshlands Road, Christchurch.

Roger Davidson, General Manager, Property and Retail Development, for Foodstuffs South Island Ltd, said that with the neighbouring subdivision ofPrestons now well under way and with the likelihood of up to 2600 houses being built in this development, this was great news for the community.

“At this stage we are not 100% sure when we will start building the supermarket. This will be dictated by the speed of the development of Prestons, but we hope to get under way in the next 18 months.

“Now that we have the consent we can get on with the detailedevaluation and design of the $20 million supermarket,” he said.

The supermarket ground floor will be 3576m2,, which willinclude a customer entrance foyer, retail, food storage and preparation areas and an enclosed loading and servicing area. There will also be a café,,  bistro and retail shops..”

There will be room for 364 on-site car parking spaces, including nine accessible spaces and cycle parking for 15 cycles.

Just like the residential development, the land on which the supermarket will be build will be TC1.

“This is a great step forward for the Prestons development as a whole as it means home buyers can purchase with certainty knowing they will have a New World supermarket on their doorstep,” he said.
