ASB supports Teach First NZ to attract high quality graduates into teaching
Teach First NZ is pleased to announce ASB as a new corporate supporter of their innovative programme to reinforce teaching as a high-status graduate choice.
Teach First NZ is a not-for-profit organisation that works to attract highly-qualified, well-rounded university graduates and professionals to secondary schools serving lower-decile communities.
Programme participants with specialist undergraduate degrees in high-priority subject areas in the New Zealand education system like English, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics and Te Reo, are selected to enter into an intensive six-week residential training programme.
Participants are then placed in a salaried teaching position in a lower-decile secondary school for two years with on-going support, mentoring and development before graduating as fully-qualified teachers.
“At ASB, we are always looking for new ways to make a valuable difference in the communities in which we operate,” says Linley Wood, Executive General Manager of Culture and Community. “Improving the supply of qualified, motivated teachers in key educational areas is a particular focus for Teach First NZ, so we are pleased to support this innovative programme that is helping to tackle the challenge of attracting quality graduates into teaching.”
Teach First NZ is run in partnership with The University of Auckland and has the support of the Secondary Principals’ Association of New Zealand.
ASB has been supporting education in New Zealand since 1926, when it launched the country’s first dedicated school banking programme. ASB’s commitment to education was recognised in 2013 with Canstar’s first Youth Banking and Education Award.
