Mayor of Porirua City Joins Telecom Foundation Board

Mayor of Porirua City Joins Telecom Foundation Board

The Telecom Foundation is proud to announce the appointment of new trustee, Mayor of Porirua City, Nick Leggett.

Nick is New Zealand's youngest Mayor and is representing New Zealand's youngest community with 25% of Porirua's residents being under the age of 15. He has been the Mayor of Porirua City since October 2010. Prior to that, he was a three term city councillor and worked in commercial real estate.

Telecom Foundation Chairman, Sir Bob Harvey is delighted to welcome Nick:

“We are over the moon that Nick has joined the Telecom Foundation, he brings a youthful perspective to the foundation and he is very dedicated to building a better future for Kiwi kids. We are looking forward to working with him”

Nick Leggett is passionate about interacting and engaging with his community and New Zealand in new and innovative ways and he says he is thrilled to be joining the foundation:

“I believe every neighbourhood has an ongoing responsibility to seek its own solutions to the challenges faced, with public and private bodies as active partners in that process. The Telecom Foundation has fantastic programmes for all Kiwis and I am excited to share the messages of payroll giving, volunteering, Givealittle and more to our people,” says Nick.

Nick’s appointment follows the recent appointment of Dr Bronwyn Hayward to the board of trustees.  Bronwyn is a Senior Lecturer in Political Science at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch. Bronwyn has a special interest in children’s issues, specifically the challenges facing young New Zealanders in today’s world.

Dr Hayward lives in Christchurch with her husband and two teenage children.

The fourth external trustee is former Children’s Commissioner, Dr John Angus. There are also internal trustees representing Telecom and its people.

Telecom Foundation

The Telecom Foundation is the umbrella for all of Telecom’s charitable initiatives; the organisation has a particular focus on encouraging generosity and creating a better future for Kiwi kids. In 2012, it acquired online fundraising platform, Givealittle.co.nz and turned it into New Zealand’s only zero fees fundraising platform. In February this year, the foundation reached a one million dollar milestone with it’s payroll giving and matching programme. In March, the foundation announced it’s partnership with the Manaiakalani Education Trust. Through the partnership, the Telecom Foundation is supporting a cluster of 11 low-decile schools showing strong improvements in learning outcomes and student engagement through digital learning.
