Monday 20th May 2013, NEW ZEALAND: This week, the world’s largest and most successful music streaming service of its kind, celebrates one year in New Zealand. Launched exactly one year ago on Wednesday, Kiwis have already streamed over a staggering 10 million hours of music and have created over 3.4 million playlists using the award-winning service.
Of that 3.4 million, over 55,000 playlists have been created about love, romance &/or sex, over 33,000 for exercising and sports, 42,000 for travel, 7,000 wedding inspired playlists and around 13,000 playlists created to help get people through their work day.
“I’m so proud of what we’ve achieved in New Zealand in such a small space of time. We’ve had unprecedented success in New Zealand, the sheer volume of activity should illustrate how popular the service has been here. We're excited that Kiwi’s are choosing us as their go-to source to discover and consume more music than ever before.” - comments Kate Vale, Managing Director Australia & New Zealand.
American duo Macklemore & Ryan Lewis were the Most Streamed Artist over the last year, and also took out the title of Most Streamed Track with their global hit Thrift Shop. Coming in second to the golden duo as most popular artist was Rihanna, followed by Ed Sheeran, Maroon 5, Lana Del Rey, One Direction, P!nk, Bruno Mars, Mumford & Sons, and Calvin Harris.
New Zealanders also loved local artists, with Six60 achieving the title of Most Streamed Local Artist, followed closely by Lorde. Top local tracks went to Titanium with his hit Come on Home, followed closely by Forever from Six60 and Take It Easy (Carl Dimataga Remix) by Stan Walker.
Over the year, Spotify has amassed local star fans including Kimbra, Lorde, Jamie McDell, Dane Rumble, Kimberley Crossman, and Ruby Frost, and partnered with key events such as the Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards, Rhythm & Vines, and Rhythm & Alps.
