Business optimism in our monthly BNZ Confidence Survey has reached a record net 57% feeling positive compared with 45% in May and 25% in April. The survey has captured reaction to the Budget and Fonterra’s announcement of a $1.20 increase in the milksolids payout along with a five cent fall in the NZ dollar against the greenback.
The strong level of sentiment has positive implications for business investment and hiring and therefore consumer willingness to spend along with government tax receipts from PAYE, GST, and company tax.
This month we introduced three new questions as follows.
Do you personally feel happy or unhappy that house prices are rising?
Only 29% of Kiwis are actually unhappy about house prices rising. 42% are indifferent and 29% happy about rising prices.
Are you relaxed or concerned about New Zealand's rising economic relationship with China?
66% of people are unconcerned, 12% indifferent, and just 22% concerned.
Are you thinking about borrowing more money for your business in the next three months?
28% of businesses are thinking about raising their debt levels.
