Unreserved Dispersal Draft Featured at NZB Winter Sale

Earlier this year the New Zealand racing fraternity was saddened by the loss of the long-serving and much respected horseman Jim Campin. On 2 August at Karaka a selection of his Chequer’s Stud crop will be offered on an unreserved basis, forming the largest draft at the 2013 Winter Mixed Bloodstock Sale.

Both breeder and trainer, Campin was connected to many talented horses in his time, including training four individual Group 1 winners. The most successful horse to go through his stable was Vice Regal, who performed at the top class on both sides of the Tasman.

In 1970, Campin open the doors to his Chequers Stud property near Cambridge. Campin quickly established himself as a successful breeder. The farm’s foundation sire was Bismark II, who sired one of the most influential stallions of his time in Vice Regal. Raced and trained by Campin, Vice Regal later stood at Chequers Stud. Vice Regal sired six individual Group 1 winners but it was as a broodmare sire where he had his biggest influence, siring the dams of 13 individual Group 1 winners.

Campin had further success with Deputy Governor. He sired seven individual Group 1 winners and is still making his impact felt as a broodmare sire with two individual Group 1 winners, also the damsire of the very promising Folding Gear.

Under Campin’s management Chequers Stud produced 36 individual Group 1 winners. The farm has produced horses that have performed at the highest level across the world, including Derby winners Roysyn and Hades-Helene Vitality (HK) and dual hemisphere Group 1 winner Zirna.

NZB is offering 24 horses on behalf of Jim Campin’s Estate at the upcoming Winter Mixed Bloodstock Sale, including 18 broodmares, two two-year-olds, three racehorses and one unraced horse. There are a number of notable lots among them.

Notable Mares:

Lot 24, the dual listed winning mare Royal Show, the dam of the well performed Group 2 winning Folding Gear. She has been served by Iffraaj.
Lot 49, the stakes place getter Danceabeel, by champion sire Zabeel, she is the dam of two takes winning horses Ishiabeel and Video Star. She is in foal to Showcasing.
Lot 56, the Group 1 winning mare Emerald, from a line of successful Chequers Stud mares and in foal to Iffraaj.

In the racehorse section is Lot 76, Ripple, trained in the South by Michael Pitman this filly has had just two starts for an impressive win on debut.

In 2010 Campin handed over control of the stud to his sons, Mark Fraser-Campin and Chris Campin.

“Dad actually led through Lot 1 when the Karaka Sale complex opened,” recalled Chris Campin.

“Chequers Stud has been selling through Wrightson Bloodstock, as it was at the time, and in recent times NZB, since the 1970’s. In fact up until recently Chequers Stud had the best percentage of runners to stakes winners in New Zealand,” commented Campin.

Chequers Stud, founded over four decades ago, is still very much alive and kicking. They are standing the precious son of Tale of the Cat in Battle Paint. Using innovative marketing strategy to promote Battle Paint, who stood his first season in 2010, they offered breeders a free return to the stallion if their mare produces a two-year-old winner by the stallion.
