Auckland and Christchurch Continue to Drive Commercial Vehicle Sales
“Commercial vehicle registrations remains extraordinarily strong with monthly registrations of 3,181 vehicles. This is the strongest June sales since 1982, says David Crawford of the Motor Industry Association. Year to date commercial registrations of 14,754 are 3050 registrations (26%) ahead of this time in June 2012 (11,704 registrations). This reflects strong housing market in Auckland and the Christchurch rebuild, providing business confidence to the trade sector.
New passenger car registrations of 7,542 vehicles in June were the strongest since 2005 (7,713 registrations). Year to date passenger vehicle registrations of 39,781 vehicles are 1,636 (4.3%) ahead of this time last year (38,145 registrations).
For the month of June Toyota remains the market leader with 21.9% market share, or 2350 registrations (1,433 passenger cars and 917 commercials). Ford was second with 11.3% market share (1,210 registrations), followed by Holden on 10.2% (1,097 registrations).
The top selling model for the month of June was the Toyota Corolla with 416 registrations followed by the Toyota RAV4 with 343 registrations, with the Hyundai Santa Fe in third with 312 registrations. In the commercial segment the Toyota Hilux was the top selling model with 665 registrations, followed by the Ford Ranger (416 registrations) and Nissan Navara (286 registrations).
The Toyota Hilux with 2,449 registrations and the Ford Ranger with 2,197 registrations are the two top selling commercial models for 2013 year to date.
For the month of June the SUV segment was the most popular with 29% of total registrations reflecting the dominant position year to date with 28% of all registrations. This was followed by the Pick Up/Chassis segment which accounted for 22% of all registrations for the month and 19% year to date.
Total vehicle registrations for 2012 were 100,795. Year to date there have been 54,475 registrations reflecting a strong new vehicle sector in 2013. ‘With a strong New Zealand dollar and economic confidence in our two largest cities we are on track to sell more than 100,000 new vehicles for the year’, say David Crawford.
