Release of the New Zealand Energy Quarterly

11 July 2013

Release of the New Zealand Energy Quarterly

Quarterly energy supply, demand, price and greenhouse gas statistics were published today, along with the latest edition of the Ministry of Business, Innovation & Employment’s New Zealand Energy Quarterly.

Greenhouse gas emissions from electricity generation during the March quarter 2013 was four per cent lower than the same quarter of 2012.

“March 2013 and March 2012 were both dry quarters,” said MBIE’s Modelling and Sector Trends Manager Bryan Field.

“The four per cent difference in electricity generation emissions between the two quarters was driven by the retirement of Huntly unit 3 late last year, meaning lower coal generation in the March 2013 quarter,” he added.

At the same time the Ministry also released the latest Quarterly Survey of Domestic Electricity Prices as at 15 May 2013.

“Residential electricity price growth of 3.0 per cent over the year to 15 May 2013 was the lowest since 2010.

“This was in spite of several significant increases to lines charges from 1 April 2013,” Mr Field said.
