Online job vacancies fall in June

Online job vacancies decreased in June following an increase in May, according to the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment’s latest Jobs Online report.

The latest seasonally adjusted results show that online advertisements fell by 3.6 per cent.  Job vacancies for skilled workers fell by 2.8 per cent in June, with the information technology industry experiencing the biggest fall (down 5.5 per cent).

However, vacancies for skilled workers increased in two industry groups. The hospitality and tourism industry had the largest monthly rise (up 4.3 per cent), followed by the sales, retail, marketing and advertising industry (up 0.9 per cent).

While all regions saw a fall in the number of skilled worker vacancies, the biggest decrease was in Wellington (down 8.1 per cent), followed by the North Island (excluding Auckland and Wellington) region (down 6.8 per cent), and Canterbury (down 3.1 per cent).

Despite a decrease in June, things are still looking up overall.  In the year to June, skilled vacancies increased by 1.5 per cent, while all vacancies increased by 3.1 per cent. Vacancies for skilled workers in Canterbury had the largest growth at 6.8 per cent, followed by Auckland (up 1.9 per cent).

In Canterbury the largest increase was in the hospitality and tourism industry (up 26.2 per cent), followed by the sales, retail, marketing and advertising industry (up 21.2 per cent) and information technology industry (up 11.4 per cent).

“An upward trend is emerging, but the month-to-month figures are volatile, particularly in Canterbury,” said the Ministry’s manager of Labour Market and Business Performance, David Paterson.
