Singapore Airlines Announces Supplementary Summer Services to Christchurch

Singapore Airlines will add two extra flights a week to Christchurch from 9 December 2013 to 16 January 2014, to cater to the strong demand for travel to the South Island over the busy summer holidays. During the period, Singapore Airlines will operate an additional 10 flights connecting the airline’s global network to Christchurch. The supplementary flights will be operated with the recently retrofitted Boeing 777-200. 

“Singapore Airlines has been serving Christchurch and the South Island for nearly 30 years,” said Edwin Chiang, Singapore Airline’s General Manager New Zealand. “We’ve been committed to this market and the New Zealand tourism industry for a long time and it’s great to see the resurgence in visitors post-earthquakes.”

Singapore Airlines already serves Christchurch with daily services, providing tourists direct access to the gateway to the South Island. The service increase will give travellers better flight options, representing an increase of 2710 seats (29 percent increase), as well as provide extra frequency for exporters and about 180 tonnes of additional cargo capacity.

“The demand for summer seats to Christchurch is high, thanks to renewed growth in the tourism industry. We’re an active partner in Christchurch's tourism industry, and continue to work with our partners through the rebuilding phase. Seeing this kind of travel demand is a wonderful indicator of the city’s recovery,” said Mr Chiang. 

The increase is testament to the popularity of the route and the company’s commitment to providing greater flexibility, convenience and choice when traveling between Christchurch and Singapore.

“Singapore Airlines started flying between Christchurch and Singapore on 7 December 1986 and was the first international carrier to offer services out of Christchurch,” said Christchurch Airport CEO, Jim Boult. 

“Seeing the increase in demand for travel to Christchurch is fantastic. It’s a sign we’re getting it right and moving on from some really challenging years. We appreciate the loyalty and investment that Singapore Airlines, the world's most awarded airline, has made to providing international travel to and from the South Island. The demand that has led to these extra flights proves travellers appreciate it too.”
